The Work (Byron Katie)

Byron Katie teaches The Work. It's explained in her book called
Loving What Is
.
It's strangely similar to tapping. The idea is that any thought that results in negative emotions is not true. You ask yourself four questions about the thought (ideally writing down the questions and answers):
1. Is it true?
2. Can I be certain that it's true? - if the answer to question 1 is yes.
3. How does that though make me feel and act? - notice how it affects you.
4. Who would I be if I couldn't think that thought? - visualize yourself in the situation without the thought.
And then you turn it around. So if the though is: "He hates me." some turn arounds are: "He does not hate me.", "I hate me", "I hate him." And you find examples of why some or all of these are true.
After doing this, the thoughts tend to not be attracted to you any more.
Like tapping, this is a very powerful way of increasing awareness. Both lead to freedom.

I signed up to Byron Katie's one-day workshop with Alternatives in July:
http://www.alternatives.org.uk/Site/Contents/EventDescription.asp?EventID=578
I think her stuff is very powerful, and gives a really good perspective on all of this.

It brings to mind some of the work of Tony Robbins and how emotions, even negative emotions are there as signals for you to take action. He states that one of the best ways of dealing with negative emotions is by simply changing your perception of what has invoked the emotion. from my understanding, Katie's 'The Work' provides a fantastic framework for doing just that and ultimately reinforcing the reframe. Thanks for posting Duncan, I am going to read a little more into her work now and possibly may attend the workshop too. While i am at it i may will also write up a post on Tony Robbins work on emotions.

I did Unleash The Power Within with Anthony Robbins last year. I was surprised when he said this about recently getting up at 5am to play polo: "I finally felt peace. I've never felt that before." He's just made $400M selling a company and he's only just experienced peace. That's a little concerning.
I don't agree that it's a good idea to use negative emotions to guide your actions. This is what most people do all the time unconsciously. This will result in the future being a recreation of the past.
The way I understand The Work is this: it causes you to perceive the cost of the negative thought, which gives you motivation to change, then to vision your life without the thought, and finally to find a deeper truth. All of this then activates the releasing mechanism; the blockage is then released.

I understand your view and i would like to add the point i am trying to get across is the idea that the emotion is attempting to send a signal, but most people misinterpret the message or get caught up in the emotion e.g.
Person A: grrr... this has made me so angry
Person B: why has it made you so angry
Person A: i dont know but it has
Person B: could it be because this emotion of anger is trying to send you the signal "an important rule you have in your life has been violated, either by yourself or someone else?
Person A: actually, yes, person C said....blah blah blah
I find it a very useful but by no means infallible diagnostic tool. Listening to what our bodies are telling us and understanding what it means is very powerful indeed.
Ive written up a separate post on Action Signals for those interrested
http://www.tappingforum.com/topic/198.0/emotions-action-signals.html
i also understand your concerns with Antony Robbins, his marketing people just wont stop harrasing me but none the less there are diamonds among the chaff and as with any tool pick one which works for you.
all the best,
Ben Huss-Smickler

Hey, so here's the interesting thing; it's a pretty deep insight though, it took me a long while to grasp it.
If you have a negative feeling, it means that your view of the world is wrong. The theory of 'Cognitive Dissonance' states basically that any stress occurs when the world in your head differs from reality.
If you take that as a given, it means that any action you take based on that negative feeling is action being taken within that innaccurate world view. So not only does it reinforce the false world view but it is also very likely to be the wrong action to take.

That's a great insight Magnus. An action based on a negative emotion is an action based on the belief of a lie. But is that "wrong"? After all, even we are part of reality; so in some sense even our delusion is "right"; it's also part of reality. In fact, there is no "wrong" action; there is only action. Some people call action based on non-delusion, "skillful action". Skillful action is in alignment with the rest of the universe. It is cooperating with the greater benevolence in arriving at what we really want.

That's a helpful clarification.
There is no right or wrong action. By wrong I mean action that is in alignment with the false reality, rather than in alignment with the rest of the universe.

A friend told me about Tapping. And a google search brought me here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about Tapping and other methods.
Reading the words above about "
false reality
" and "
that your view of the world is wrong
" I immediately hear Katie saying :
Is it true?
I feel rich and blessed for being able to see and hear Katie for 3 days when she is in Amsterdam next month.
3 years ago I had a severe relapse caused by Multiple Sclerosis the day before I attended Katie's 9 day School workshop. I lost the feeling in the right side of my body. While everybody around me advised me to cancel, I was stubborn and went. It couldn't have been more perfect timing.
I still find it hard to describe what those 9 days did to me. While my MS symptoms were getting worse, I felt more and more perfect. The first days I could still use my right hand a bit for writing. It was hard to read my own writing because after only writing 9 lines, my paper (A4) was full because of the shaking in my arm. So I started writing with my left hand. (Talking about a turnaround
)
When I came back home my neurologist was in shock I felt and looked great, while my body was having all these symptoms. It took a few months for the most parts of the feeling get back and I could write with my right hand again. I still have different feeling sensation in my right hand. But that's no problem for me.
The Work changed my life. Even for people who don't have MS or a relapse, I can highly recommend The Work of Byron Katie.
I don't know why I am writing all this. I just felt I should share my experience with the Work when I read this topic. Maybe it's of use for someone.
Sorry for my English. Writing in English is harder than speaking.

Hi Schanulleke
Thank you for sharing your story with us. It is so encouraging and uplifting to hear how empowering 'the works' have been for you.
I am volunteering at an MS clinic to explore the role Tapping could play in helping relieve symptoms of MS. I am still researching and experimenting with 'the works' but i would be interested in discussing how effective you have found tapping.
All the best,
Ben Huss

Hi Ben,
I would love to hear about your results and findings of tapping with MS. At this moment I don't have much to share about my results with tapping. I'm still investigating and reading. I guess I should just start tapping. But that's me, I'm a slow starter.
Next week I have a workshop to learn the ins-and-outs about tapping. I registered before I found this website and all the other information that's available on the web. Oh well, I guess it can't hurt to spend a whole day on tapping and learn from a live person.
The moment I can say something about my experience with tapping on MS issues I will let you know.

hears my take on life right now!!!
In my past I grumbled about life I complained about how my boss and my coworkers treated me
I now see that I was creating my own reality by my own words I turned the world against me
but God lead me to learn about my own tongue and the power its has on life
Its like a rudder of a ship, which is such a small thing but it can turn a big ship
Now my job is fantastic and I have friends at work
life and wealth is in the power of the tongue and what you ask for!!!...

I think her name was Katie Byron. The work is all about turning things around, so she became Byron Kate.
